Poetry recitings in the produce department
Friday was pay day. I love pay day. I get to go grocery shopping. I find grocery shopping very relaxing. Making the lists, clipping the coupons, planning the meals for the next two weeks. I don't know. Guess I'm a little weird that way. There's just something about the challenge of feeding a family of 7 and staying within my grocery budget that just makes my day. I'm sure Steve appreciates it too.
Yesterday was just a beautiful day. So warm I was able to break out my new white baby doll trenchcoat for the first time since I bought it a month or so ago. That made me happy. I headed to Target, bought a green tea and wandered the aisles. I noticed a rather large clearance area near where they sell bedding and stuff. I'm sure that section has a name, but it escapes me right now. I dug through all the stuff and scored 3 ivory dining room chair covers for $5 per cover. I had bought 3 ivory chair covers the day before in a similar pattern, different brand for $13 a piece. I needed 6 to cover the chair around my table. Close enough, and at $5 a pop, who cares. I'm only buying them because I want to keep the white seat cushions nice for as long as possible. These can be thrown in the wash, unlike the seat cushions that would have to be upholstered if some child spilled a bowl of spaghetti all over it. With our bible study/potluck dinner starting back up for the first time since we bought the new table, I was freaking about not having covers for all the chairs. I was ready to slap trash bags over 'em like I had been doing when the kids were eating something extremely messy.
Anyway, that made me happy. Probaby boring filler fluff for you, but a good deal turns me on. Plus less stress for me about the table. It's bad enough that I'm stressing about my weight. I'm up to 4 lbs gained in 2 1/2 weeks. Grrrr. I'm so swollen this morning. Driving me nuts.
So after Target, I headed over to Food Lion. There's always the same nice old guy in the produce department every day of the week, he's there. I didn't know unloading produce was such a full time job, but he's always there. Really nice guy, he's usually singing along with whatever song is being playing over the loudspeaker.
Yesterday, he asked me if I wanted to hear a little something. I was confused and wondering what in the world he would want to tell me. I thought maybe a story or something. So I said, "Sure". So there in the produce department, I was treating to a reciting of one of his poems. I didn't know what to say. It was good and I tried to keep a pleasant look on my face, not a "this is weird, why is this guy reciting poetry to me?" look on my face. He finished it up. He went on to say that it was from his poetry book that was about to be in it's 3rd publishing. I made some small talk about writing poetry at one time in my life, but now my brain was mush thanks to having 5 kids. Heh.
He started to talk to some other lady that had wandered into the area to peruse the fruit. As I walked the store, picking up the things on my list, I could hear him from time to time singing his heart out with the music above while he happily restocked and rearranged the produce. I don't know why he is working in the produce section of my local grocery store if he has a book of poetry out. But he seems content, happy even, to be there, working and talking with the customers, making their days a little more interesting and a bit brighter that it was before.

I LOVE GETTING (I'll stop yelling now) a great deal. It's a thrill and a half. Enjoy it. Good thing their washable. But are they bleachable!
