I Don't Get It....

Rachael Ray's show in entirely on ice today. Even her stove is encased in ice. Why? Do they really think people that don't normally watch the show would stop and watch because it's on ice today? It's usually on in the morning and I'll stop and watch, but I find myself not watching today because I'm just not buying into the gimmick. I'm stubborn like that.

I finally finished Mayflower and Devil in the White City. I started them last year, shortly after Steve purchased them, but abandoned them. I love history, so these books were right up my alley.

Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War

Mayflower really opened my eyes to what the Pilgrims really went through. It seems in my Catholic school upbringing, they left out the part where the Pilgrims drank beer on the way over and many other things.

As for Devil in the White City, it left me wondering why I had never heard about this time in our country's history. The hardest part of both books, was all the names that were thrown at me. I was determined to keep them straight, even if I had to read and reread til I could keep them straight.

So, techinically, I've finished 2 books this year, as I didn't count them in my books finished last year. Time to head back to the thrift store and see what I can find to read next.

What is the worst city you've ever been to and why?

Wheeling, West Virginia. We drove through there on the way home from Steve's business trip to Missouri last year (I think that's when, but I'm not sure.). Anyway, I've never been to a town so poor and rundown. It brought tears to my eyes to see the living conditions, the empty buildings, the people. It was a wake up call as to how lucky and blessed I am. I take for granted having a decent roof over my head, a husband that proves more than enough, clothes on my back. Seeing the way people lived in this town, I was incredulous that there are places like this in the United States.

Vox compromised for us. They didn't bring back [this is good], but they did change the different sections to say [culture is good] etc. Thanks Vox. Now if only I could stop hitting that dumb create button everytime I want to go to the home page!

Which one of your ancestors would you most like to talk to?

I'd love to meet my Great Grandmother Mayer. She was an immigrant from Hungary. She came over in the belly of a boat with only hardboiled eggs and shotglasses of beer to drink. She met my Great Grandfather here in the states. Strangely, they had grown up in the same village in Hungary, not too far apart. My Mom-Mom was embarrassed by the fact that her parents were immigrants, so she never learned how to cook any of the Hungarian specialities my Great Grandmother made. She didn't really get any of her history either. Just that Great Grandma Mayer's father had a vineyard somewhere in Hungary, I think near Budapest (correct me if I'm wrong, Nicole or Marlen). Mom-Mom told me how she regretted not talking to her mother about these things before she was gone. Guess it all will just remain a mystery.

Conversation with Steve

Janie, bored as usual and missing Steve, decides to call him at work and bug him.

Steve: "Hello"

Janie: "Hi, guess what I'm making for dinner?"

Steve: "Hmmm? (followed by silence while he thinks) Shepherd's Pie?"

Janie: "Yup, doesn't that make you want to come home?"

Steve: "Yeah, but I have to stay longer."

Janie: (insert a whine here)

Steve: "Well, I could come home now and have Shepherd's Pie or I could stay at work longer, take off tomorrow and take you to......"

Janie: "Oooooh, IHOP?" (Janie has been ~~whining~~ talking about craving IHOP for almost a week now and begging Steve to take her. Seriously, she is not going to go to IHOP by herself!)

Steve: "Yup"

Janie: "Ok, see you later."

(Isn't he wonderful?)
