Today is my one year Voxiversary. I originally joined just to be able to comment on my dear friends, Amy and Leilani's blogs. I'm so glad they invited me over. It's been a year and I love it. I've met so many awesome people, made new friends, and spread the blogging bug among my husband's family. It's been a good blogging year.
Speaking of wonderful friends I've made on Vox, Ms. Hannahbanana and her sister, Essiequard are celebrating their birthday. I am eating "Sticky Toffee Pudding" ice cream in their honor. If only I had known I would've whipped up a dinner of fish and chips instead, but this was the best I could do on such short notice.
So it's a good day all around. I think I will celebrate with a nap!
I just ate 3/4 of a pint of Ben and Jerry's Chubby Hubby ice cream.
My mom called me up on Thursday and wanted all five kids for the weekend. Yes, she can drive me nuts as times, but it's times like these that completely make up for that. She wanted to take them so my former in laws could visit with Victoria, Soph, and Josiah. They haven't seen the kids since their father moved down to North Carolina. Of course, being fair like she is, she kept Alex and Ashley too. She didn't want them to feel left out.
So we went to the Metro Station yesterday afternoon to pick up Steve. Sometimes with traffic, it's just easier for him to take the Metro from the airport. He had goodies for all of us. Starbucks bears for the youngest three kids, a t-shirt and coffee mug for Victoria, and arrowheads for Alex. He's been making his own crossbows and arrows thanks to this book...
Anyway, we headed up to my mom's right after that. Grammie had a big pot of her homemade sloppy joe and real soda for the kids. Unlike Mom, who makes them drink water at home (I'm a meanie.) After I ate a bunch of her sloppy joe, using it as a dip with Utz chips (one of the best ways to eat this stuff!), we took my mom's car since she needed the minivan. Can't fit all 5 kids in her purple convertible Sebring (I bet Michael from "The Office" would be jealous). So we took that, and drove down to Annapolis.
It was a perfect night to walk down Main Street and along the docks. I kept my "Ugly Outfit" on, and was feeling a bit self concious walking around in it. I wanted to eat outside, so we walked up and down Main Street looking for some place with outdoor seating available. I should've gone with my gut and just ate inside the little French restaurant, because the sushi place we ended up eating at was lacking. My avocado salad was delicious. Spider roll, not horrible, but could've been better. Poor Steve specifically told the girl he didn't like spicy foods, and she suggested the Curry Chicken. I like spicy food, but this dish was too spicy for me.
After dinner, we had to get dessert. There was no way I was going to pass up Ben and Jerry's. The girl behind the counter let me sample several flavors before I decided. I tried the "Lemon Meringue" (only available in Scoop Shops) and "Cinnamon Bun". I knew I wasn't going to get the "Cinnamon Bun" as I had already noticed the "Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl" (only available in Scoop Shops too). I must confess, I tried the "Cinnamon Bun" to decide whether I would buy any in the pint the next time my grocery store had it on sale. I should've tried the Creme Brulee too. That girl would've given me free samples of every flavor if I had asked. But I was already feeling guilty for trying the first two, knowing I didn't really want them.
We just walked around the docks with our ice cream cones after that. It was really busy and crazy. It seemed that having a Naval Academy uniform on or hanging in your own boat by the docks meant that you could pick up just about any girl you wanted. The bar scene was hoping too. Steve and I, being the big old dorks we are, spent our crazy Friday night taking pictures, trying new aperatures and settings. We are wild and crazy like that. Our only regret was not bringing a tripod. We'll have to risk looking like real nerds and take it with us to Alexandria tonight. I've been dying to walk around that town, but have yet to. I longingly gaze down the roads every time I take Steve to the airport.
Ok, Steve and I are supposed to be working on getting the screen porch off my bedroom cleaned and back to "quiet oasis" status. Right now it is doubling as storage area for crown moulding and other stuff, like a sink top from our bathroom remodel last fall. Not conducive to relaxing right now.
If you look closely, the edge says "Fudge Royale". While at another store, I looked for Fudge Ripple in the handy dandy 5 qt tub complete with convenient carrying handle. Nope, this time it was Fudge Swirl.
See, when I was a child, we weren't poor, but we were exactly well to do either. We got by and didn't know any better. We were happy. We had ice cream. We had fudge ripple ice cream. Well, I wasn't happy about the fudge ripple. As a matter of fact, I can't stand fudge ripple. Give me plain vanilla, plain chocolate, neapolitan, anything but fudge ripple. Yet, that always seemed to be what was in the freezer. I think my mother thought it was a compromise between vanilla and chocolate. Oh, how I longed for anything but fudge ripple. Sometimes as a special surprise, my mom would buy chocolate marshmallow or tin roof sundae. Honestly, I hated these even more than fudge ripple. Not that I ever turned any of these down. Ice cream in a flavor I dislike is definitely better than not having ice cream at all.
So I posted that picture for my sister, Nicole. We were eating Ben & Jerry's...ok, I was eating Ben & Jerry's and discussing ice cream flavors of our childhood. We were reminiscing about eating cheap fudge ripple ice cream out of an economy sized tub. Ah, those were the days.
And so is the fridge and microwave. I have scrubbed crevices and corners that I hadn't yet discovered since living here in my bathroom and fridge. The dirt I found hiding there can testify to that fact. It was like evicting a bunch of squatters. I found 'em and it was their time to go. I wiped dirty hand prints off of many surfaces. Ick. My kitchen sink is clogged for some reason. Steve is going to bring me some Draino. Hopefully that does the trick.
I also finished off the Ben and Jerry's Half Baked and opened up a new container of Oatmeal Cookie Chunk. I'd say I've been pretty productive so far. Now I'm off to clean out the rabbit cage and wash the hardwood floors by hand. Woohoo! I think I'm going to need more ice cream after that.
I've realized that Food Lion can't stock my favorite ice cream fast enough. I take sole responsibility for buying all the Oatmeal Cookie Chunk in the past week. When I went back today, they were out. No ice cream for me. As a matter of fact, I didn't buy any ice cream at all. I fully anticipate eating like a pig this weekend when my friends come to visit. I love to feed people, and I love to eat. So there will plenty of tasty food around here. There will be crab cakes, hamburgers, hot dogs, homemade pizza, homemade guacamole, dark chocolate brownies, chocolate strawberry cake, just to name a tiny bit of what I plan on cooking. I think I had better lay off the ice cream for now.
I did, however, buy a pineapple and am on my way to eating the whole thing. It's so tasty and sweet. I've hidden it in the fridge and have been snacking on it while I'm going about trying to get my vanload of groceries put away. I've accomplished nothing but the shopping today. I've got two days to whip this house into "company" shape!! I suppose I ought to get back to that. I'll try and catch some time to read blogs and say hi to everyone tonight.
Thanks for all the compliments on the new banner. Like my big sister said, it definitely fits me. You could've found me like that in my room as a child, but with a book on my lap instead.
This morning I had to get ready and go out to get cash to run up to the school. Last day for field trip money and I didn't have enough money on me. So I ran to the store, grabbed ice cream (Ben and Jerry's Oatmeal Cookie Dough, Turtle Soup and some Dibs) and sushi, took some cash out too. It's so funny how I can't get enough ice cream. Steve and I have never been big on having ice cream in the house, but lately, he's been stopping for Ben and Jerry's on his way home from work. We're polishing off pints left and right. Last night it was Half Baked Chocolate Fudge Brownie/Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Chubby Hubby. Had to have some to eat while we're watching Lost. I bet they would love Ben and Jerry's right about now. Mangos and that Dharma crap would be getting old right about now. I bet the Others have Ben and Jerry's. They could totally lure me over to their side with Ben and Jerry's.
This afternoon I've just been outside playing around with the camera, cleaning out the bird feeders, refilling the hummingbird feeder (hope it's not too late and I still get some this year!). Just enjoying the warm air. I'll upload my pictures later to see if I captured anything good. I was hoping my peonies were in bloom, but not just yet. They are my absolute favorites. I'm also anxious to see what my Pandora's Box lilies look like. The tag last year said they were cream and purple. I guess I could look it up on the 'net, but that would take the fun out of it. I did get to see a battle between a huge ugly spider and one of our 5 lined skinks. The spider was missing 3 legs last I looked. I think the skink is going to win this one.
Ok, I'm filling up my glass with more ice and tea and heading back outside.
My first problem is ice cream. You see, I had forgotten how wonderful it was in all it's creamy deliciousness. Til the other day, when I allowed myself a bite of real ice cream. None of the low fat low calorie stuff I had been eating on occasion for the past couple of months. No, Ben and Jerry's made a visit to my house, and now I can't seem to stay away.
I must confess, I didn't just buy that little cute one I posted earlier. (It was empty when I took that picture. I didn't want it to melt so I devoured it for lunch in the parking lot of Food Lion, but only because I didn't want it to melt.) So yeah, I bought the little one, first because it was cute, and food purchases should not only be based on quality, nutritional value and necessity, but also cuteness. I also bought a new flavor too. My brother in law called last night to tell me I needed to try Ben and Jerry's new flavor, "Willie Nelson's Peach Cobbler". He said it could possibly be the best flavor yet. Of course, I can't just let him make such a claim. I had to try it for myself. I have made my way a quarter of the way through that pint. I'm sure Steve and I will finish it off tonight. I can't be sure if it is truly the best til I finish the whole pint. After that I am banning ice cream from the house until Ashley's birthday party in June. Otherwise I won't fit in any of the shorts I just bought. Instead I'll be down at the Salvation Army begging them to give me my old ones back.
My other problem, moblogging. It's easy but it's addicting. That picture I posted earlier was sent from my dining room. Yes, folks, that is true laziness! It was so much faster than breaking out the camera, uploading the pictures, editing the pictures. I just wanted to show it's cuteness. Did I really need the big camera to show that? Did you need awesome picture quality? Ok, I'm just trying to excuse my laziness. Expect more moblogging from other rooms in my house in the near future because it's so ridiculously easy! I might even get caught up on the laundry now.
Ok, maybe not, sorry to get your hopes up Steve.
Victoria, Sophia and Josiah are home safe from North Carolina. Victoria is so happy with her new chinchilla. Definitely better than a replacement rat she says. We were racking our brains sitting outside the Twin Kiss Ice Cream Parlor on 301 while licking our ice cream cones and sucking down our milkshakes enjoying the beautiful day. At one point, we didn't think we would come up with anything. Victoria even told me I needed to take a picture and stick it on my blog and get your suggestions.
Then suddenly within seconds of each other we blurted out, "ZuZu's Petals!". So ZuZu it is, after George Bailey's daughter on "It's a Wonderful Life", one of our family's all time favorite movies. Instantly we knew we had our name. It was perfect.
ZuZu has a new cage too. Multilevel living. She's going nuts in it. Jumping around like a crazy chilla. Rolling around in her dust bath. She's cracking us up with all her crazy antics.
To change the subject the overeating and indulging continues. We went to a cheap Mexican restaurant for lunch with my brother in law, Rob. I had my first tamale. I'm wondering why I hadn't tried one before. To quote Dora, "Yum, Yum, Yum, Deliciouso!". We also stopped at the Twin Kiss on our way back from picking the kids up in Virginia. We drove an hour south to help cut some drive time off of their father's long drive to and from North Carolina. So anyway, the Twin Kiss, I had a soft serve vanilla cone with chocolate sprinkles. Mmmmm. I totally would've moblogged it, but my phone died. Oh the tragedy!!!!
Oh, oh, oh and just now I took my other ball of pizza dough that I had bought from a small local deli/butcher/grocery/liquor store. They sell there own pizza dough frozen, 2 balls of dough for $1.99. I bought them to try with my flammenkuchen. All the recipes I've found called for pizza dough, usually homemade, but I'm not that brave yet. I have a fear of making breads or anything else that requires the use of yeast and kneading. So anyway, I used one yesterday for that beautiful delicious flammenkuchen (Recipe to come NorthernGeek, I haven't forgotten you!). The other was just sitting in the fridge, and I had the rest of the ingredients to make pizza, so I did. And it is yummy. Steve and I are eating it right now. No picture though, sorry. I'm going to pick up more dough this week and make pizza for dinner one night this week.
I'm off to eat more ice cream and help Steve finish up this pizza. Tomorrow, I'll explain what a "flammenkuchen" is and post a recipe.
