Gary was over the house the other night for our traditional Heroes viewing. While we were waiting for Steve to get home from work, we were talking about this tv show, Bizarre Foods with Anthony Zimmerman. He found it on our guide and set the DVR to tape it.
I must admit, as much as it grosses me out, I really enjoy this show. The kids love it too.
He goes to all sorts of interesting places around the world and eats the strangest local delicacies. It got me to thinking though. I love to travel and I would love to see the world. I'm wondering if someone offered me the same job, to eat this nasty stuff, but paid to travel the world at the same time, if I would take it. Would you? I'm undecided at the moment having just watched the dude eat Balut.
or was Pushing Daisies just awesome last night? Personally, I thought it was the best one so far. I'm really loving this show. Thanks Cori, if it wasn't for you threatening to punch me in the neck, I probably would've just bypassed it.
Steve and I had a lovely kid-free Friday night. Victoria, Sophia, and Josiah are with their father and stepmother for the weekend. Alex and Ashley went over to Grandma P's abode. We stayed in a watched a movie (Chocolat) and slept wonderfully late this morning. I had wanted to get up early and go to breakfast (I have coupons), but bed was warm and comfortable and sleep feels so good. I decided to sleep in and just make breakfast at home.
We rolled out of bed around 10:30. I made my version of a Bob Evans Skillet Meal. I layered home fries, scrambled eggs, sausage gravy and topped it with cheddar cheese. Mmmm, nothing like starting the day with some heart attack inducing breakfast foods. Sure beats the Fibre One I normally eat most mornings that Victoria says tastes like cardboard. As a bonus, I saved money and didn't have to change out of my pajamas.
After we had breakfast, Steve and I headed into the boys' room to throw away some of their junk reorganize their stuff. We tried to get as much done as we could before we had to meet up with Rob and Gary. Gary had some extra tickets to a Bull and Oyster Roast thrown by a local business to benefit the American Cancer Society. Seriously, you think I'm going to pass up free food? Steve asked if I was interested. Um...yeah!
The Bull and Oyster Roast was interesting. Southern Maryland's finest were there. Nothing like some tasty meat cooked over a huge fire and good old people watching. The dj played songs like "The Electric Slide" and "Booty Call". They even had a "beer truck". If only I could've figured out a way to get a picture of the woman with the huge Tazmanian Devil tattoo on calf with the inscription "100% B*tch" to share with you all. Gotta give her props for putting a permanent warning label on herself.
I was the only one that ate the steamed oysters. For some reason, despite being born and raised in Maryland, Steve and his brothers just aren't big fans. I don't eat them raw. That is just nasty. Anything that resembles snot just isn't going into my stomach. I'm still curious as to who was the first person to discover that oysters are edible. What would make someone look at that and think, Oooh let me see if that is something I can actually eat.
Sadly, there wasn't any dessert. Seriously, what kind of shindig doesn't have anything sweet to finish off the meal? I had Steve stop off at Nick's so I could pick up some ice cream on the way back to his parent's house. I ended up with Haagan Daas Sticky Toffee Pudding ice cream and Steve found another Boston Cream Pie. I couldn't pass it up knowing that it could be months before I see another one. So the money I saved by not going to breakfast paid for my ice cream and the pie. I'm on a personal quest to share this delicious pie with as many people as I can, so I made sure Mrs. P took a slice for everyone in her house. I wonder if she thinks it's the best pie ever like I do.
While we were hanging out at the P's, we watched Pushing Daisies. I forgot to DVR the encore presentation and I didn't want to risk having my neck punched by Cori. Steve and I are definitely adding it to our Fall tv schedule. Mainly because we liked it, but we also don't want to risk Cori punching us in the neck if we decided it wasn't worth watching on a weekly basis.
Now we are home. We've had some pie and Steve is waiting for me to wrap this up so we can watch an episode of Scrubs before bed. He keeps glancing over to see whether I am done or not. I think I'll type an extra paragraph of filler just to be a brat. Ok, not really. I'm out of stuff to say and that doesn't happen too often. So yeah, hope everyone is having a good weekend so far too.
My brother in law, Rob, is here. He came over to watch Jeopardy and The Office with Steve and I. I made him a nice homecooked meal of spaghetti and some carrot cake cookies with cream cheese frosting. Despite all this, he has the audacity to say that he is going to beat me at Jeopardy tonight. Seriously, can you believe this guy?
Now, I'm not saying I'm going to win, that would be prideful, but I'm not going down without a fight!
It was Wayne Brady by a knockout! "Don't Forget The Lyrics" was so much better than "The Singing Bee". The kids didn't get to see "The Singing Bee", so we ended up watching it again after "Don't Forget the Lyrics". It was so cheesy. I cringed the whole time, feeling bad for everyone involved. "Don't Forget the Lyrics" comes on again tonight. I'm so glad to have found something decent to watch this summer. Although disc 2 of Scrubs, Season 1, just came in the mail yesterday. Can't wait to get started on that. We also got "Thank You For Smoking" and another movie, but I'm not sure what the other one was. Steve is more up on what is in our queue.
Steve also rented Eragon and Miss Potter from Blockbuster for us to watch with the kids. So who knows what we'll end up watching tonight. Probably Miss Potter since my mom is coming down to spend the night. Hmmm, I think I might need to run out and grab another pound of crab meat. I forgot I would have an extra person. I can easily put away 3 or 4 of my crab cakes.
Well, I'm just about done my coffee and the kids are itching to swim. Guess I throw my suit on and join them. It's too hot to watch from the deck today!
I let the girls each have a friend over from church to spend the night. I completely forget how giggly and loud preteen girls can get. Poor Josiah, I suppose I should've found a friend for him to have over. But the girls that are over are sisters and only have a younger sister, not a brother. Although, this is the boy that will sit and play "Littlest Pet Shop" or "Polly Pockets" with his sisters, but you didn't hear that from me.
Today was taco night for dinner. I love tacos. Tomorrow night it's crab cakes, baked potatoes and corn on the cob. I've been slacking in the dinner department around here. Too many frozen, prefab type dinners around here. I miss making stuff from scratch. There's nothing like making good dinner for your family. As much as they like Totinos pizzas, they just aren't as impressed by my box opening, oven preheating skills. Not that tacos are that hard either. Browning ground beef and sprinkling taco seasoning into it, yeah, just not that much of an art form.
Ok, we are all going to watch "Don't Forget the Lyrics" with Wayne Brady on Fox now. Steve DVRed it for us. It looks like it's going to be a lot better than NBC's "The Singing Bee" last night. Host Joey Fatone was lacking personality and the rest, well, it was just cheesy. Plus, I love Wayne Brady from his days on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?", so I think I'll really like this.
Ok, so I was completely stuffed after dinner and my dessert, but then Nicole and Rob requested I whip up some more of my famous guacamole. Since they are like my guests and all, I had to make some more. Then of course, I had to taste it for quality control purposes and all. Let me just say, once again I totally rocked the guac again. I really do make some good guacamole. It's my version of a guac I had in a little Mexican restaurant right off Times Square in NYC.
Anyway, I ate too much. So, to get them back for making me eat so much my tummy hurts, I got them hooked on Scrubs. The first thing Rob said after the first episode was the exact thing Steve said, "One more?". Four episodes later we are finally making ourselves stop and go to bed. They are going to take it with them to finish watching and mail it back for us. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them the 2nd time around. Good show.
I know, it's ridiculous, but I'm so happy that I have a bunch of Scrubs to catch up on this summer with Steve. We need something to do during this TV dry spell that is called Summer. It's like the TV executives expect us to go outside and do things during the warm months. Seriously.
I'm thinking instead of driving up north to Canada for our kid-free vacation this year, we'll just stay home and eat guacamole and watch Scrubs. Sounds like a plan to me.
So we started watching the first season of Scrubs last night. We were going to watch just one and go to bed early for the first time since, oh, Septemberish, but one wasn't enough. I wanted to watch a third, but I want to pace myself. I don't want to be out of shows before the summer even starts.
Anyway, we love it. We were laughing so hard. I'm so glad I never started watching it. I remember catching an episode when it first came on, and loving it, but with 3 kids and no DVR, I just never seemed to catch it when it was on. Total bonus for us, because now we have something to watch during the summer TV break.
It's kinda weird, not only are all our TV shows on hiatus, but we don't have Wednesday Night Kids programs in the summer, so it's kinda quiet. That's ok, there is always yardwork. Been doing plenty of that. Spent yesterday weeding and hauling wheelbarrows full of mulch to the backyard. Steve bought a bunch, and it's on the street near our house. Good exercise. I'm going to have nice beefy arms by the end of the summer.
We have a busy weekend ahead of us. Have to finish up getting the yard all spiffy since my sister, Nicole, and her family are coming to stay tomorrow night. It's her birthday, so I am making Maryland Crab Cakes per her request. Sunday after church the rest of my family is coming for a cookout, along with most of Steve's family. Some friends are coming too. Luckily we'll be chilling outside on the deck or by the pool. I think we have at least 20 kids total expected, including my 5. So yeah, craziness all around. But there will be lots of food, so that is really what counts. And poker, the men will be playing poker of course.
If I don't have a chance to check in (heh, me not check in on Vox, yeah right), have a great holiday weekend!
Well, the tv season has come to a close for Steve and I. All of our shows are done for the season. We did rent the first season of Scrubs from Netflix. It's one of those shows that we missed out on, but every time we catch a snippet, we find ourselves laughing hysterically. I'll probably set the DVR to tape old Seinfeld episodes too. We really enjoy that show. Of course, there is always the plethora of Rachael Ray shows that I tape. I just love her, she is so down to earth. So yeah, I'm off to do yardwork, perhaps jump in the pool if I get hot enough.
I didn't mean to forget to update today. It was so nice. I've been bitten by the Spring cleaning bug. I love the Spring cleaning bug. When it bites, I get started on a project and can't seem to stop til it's done. Now my house has 7 less bags of old clothing (and 2 nice big empty bins!) and I can walk through my garage without stepping over toys and other miscellaneous crap the kids have pulled out of boxes during winter. I figured might as well get rid of as much as I could. Trash day is tomorrow, so it was a good day to do it.
It's the one of the blessings of living in a small house with no real storage, you have to get rid of stuff. You can keep it, but you'll be swimming in it or climbing over it. I'm kind of afraid to move into a house with real storage space. Just think of all the junk I think I need that I could pack into boxes never to be opened again.
As soon as the kids arrived home from school, they were drawn like magnets to the garage. They seem to have an uncanny ability to sense when I have cleaned and organized something and head straight for it. From the kitchen I soon heard them going through bins and drawers, "Oooh, look what I found!" Grrrr. I had to kick them out several times. Luckily, we had Aw*nas and our middle school/high school stuff at church to get them out of the house and their minds off what other treasures were hiding in the garage.
Ok, just a couple of minutes til Lost. I'm going to make myself a bowl of Trail Mix Crunch Grape Nuts (I'm addicted) and snuggle up with Steve.
